Rottweilers are powerful, confident working dogs descended from Roman drover dogs, later refined in the German town of Rottweil for cattle herding and cart pulling. These large, muscular dogs are known for their calm self-assurance, intelligence, and strong protective instincts that make them excellent family guardians when properly trained. Rottweilers are deeply loyal and can be surprisingly gentle with those they trust, often seeking physical closeness despite their imposing size. They require experienced owners who can provide firm, fair leadership and extensive socialization from puppyhood. Rottweilers need substantial daily exercise and mental stimulation to prevent boredom-related behaviors. Their short, dense double coat is easy to maintain but sheds seasonally. These intelligent dogs excel at obedience training, tracking, and various dog sports with consistent positive-reinforcement methods.
